The Andre Norton MEGAPACK ® 15 Classic Novels and Short Stories edition by Andre Norton Grace Allen Hogarth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Great reading and tons of stories for the price if you love Norton and/or classic science fiction. Some of these, I must have read years ago as a teen and it's wonderful to rediscover them in digital format. I was actually quite shocked at how old some of the stories about space exploration and colonization are "Sargasso of Space" (1955) "Plague Ship" (1956), and "Time Traders," (1958) and the time she wrote them (well before Star Trek and Doctor Who beamed into our idiot lanterns). Really, they are quite wonderful to read, even if a tad dated by today's standards (I say that only because most of the characters are male in these tales as well as being in some type of military/trader/exploration service). But don't let that put you off, Norton is a great writer, and the action and situations are very interesting to read. Evan with the "exotic" space and planetary locations, Norton remains plausible with her resourceful characters, many of the stories read more like a grand adventure/survival tales than science fiction.

The Andre Norton MEGAPACK ® 15 Classic Novels and Short Stories edition by Andre Norton Grace Allen Hogarth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I have always been amazed at the ability of the author to write simple phrases that pique my imagination and allow me to build the story, the place and the characters in my mind as I read along. The mega pack includes earlier stories demonstrating the author's evolution in themes and style of writing. I enjoyed the science fiction stories but was not to enamored with "Murders for Sale" (1953) or "Ralestone" Luck (1938). The latter two appeared stale and predictable, however, given the time frame in which they were written they may have been received as new and exciting. I particularly did not like the main character in "Murders for Sale". This story was a bit choppy, did not feel complete, and the main character did not appear to be very involved. I was surprised by the Civil War story, "Ride Proud" and "Rebel Spurs". I would not categorize it as historical fiction given the level of detail about the Civil War was low but the main character was engaging and the horror of the Civil War and it's aftermath is well represented through the main characters personal circumstances. A good read all the way through.
This is a nice collection of Andre Norton's older books. They can be hard to find outside of libraries. Even if you only want one or two of the books in this collection, it is well worth the price. I have seen individual books in this collection for sale at more then the cost of the entire collection.

One improvement I would like to see if future collections would be to group stories from on series together, and in series order. That way, you could read the complete series, in order, without having to jump between collections, and figure out the right order.
Andre Norton is one of the true greats of science fiction/fantasy, but this is a book of her early practice warm-up work. You can find here many threads and motifs that she later paid off in works like "Huon of the Horn" and "Starman's Son 2250 A.D." (one of her best juvies), and "Star Guard' and particularly and especially the various Witchworld series and spinoffs. If you know anything about classic sci-fi then you know about Norton, and this collection of early juvenile novels show her honing her skills. Read it.
Years ago, I read some of her books and enjoyed them. Seeing this collection for a very low price I decided to grab it and read some classic science fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed her books. The majority of the books were science fiction from a few of her series. It's always interesting to see their visions of the future, since we are now in the future. I'd say her work ages well.

The collection also included some historical fiction, and even a murder mystery. She has a very good writing style, and the characters were engaging.

Recommended for anyone wanting to read some classic sci fi.
Just a hint on managing this digital bundle - go all the way to the end of the bundle (last page) - you will find an accessable table of contents that allows you to start with any book you want. This way - if with a little research you can figure out which stories go with one another and in what order - you can read them that way. Don't know why (!!!) they don't put something like that at the start of these digital bundles.
On the author - Andre Norton has always been one of my favorite authors. I started reading her works many years ago and have almost all of them in paperback, but this is a neat way to reread them without risking my books. Thanks for not forgetting this author now that she is gone from us.
More than a few years ago, I discovered stories by Andre Norton in Ace double novels(at $.35 per copy) and eagerly awaited the next publication. This collection of novels and shorts is a bonanza.I have read several shorts and two novels so far, "Plague Ship" and "Time Traders", both of which I have reasonable memories of from the Ace novels and I now realize that these novels were edited for length in that form. The stories are reprinted in thier full and stirring lengths in this collection, filling in some of the missing action that Ms. Andre Norton intended to be read originally. They are spellbinding and a true example of the old storyteller's art, such talent as has become somewhat lacking in these electronic days of Twitter and E-Mail.
Purchase and ENJOY.
